The White Fleet Set
The Portuguese White Fleet had a 400 year long history of connection to the island of Newfoundland, and in particular the city of St. John's, and its fishing tradition. Gaspar Corte Real had claimed the island for the king in 1501 and the Portuguese had been fishing the Grand Banks since then.
My mother worked for a company for a brief time in the 1960s that provisioned ships from the White Fleet. She spoke very highly of the people she had dealings with and clearly they thought well of her. When it became known she was to be married, she was presented with a beautiful embroidered set of table linens from Portugal. I don't believe she ever set a plate on them. Instead, she would bring them out from time to time to show my sister and I and reminisce about the White Fleet.
Presenting the White Fleet Set, a pendant and earrings that combine rose gold filled metal and ivory imitation pearls that were salvaged from an old Majorica pearl necklace. Majorica pearls are made on an island with the same name off the coast of Spain. The pendant is suspended on a matching 20 inch chain and the earrings have posts and nuggets. This set would make a wonderful wedding or anniversary present.
